About

EPL, responsible for managing one of the largest payrolls in Australasia, needs to ensure smooth, accurate, and consistent execution of payments every two weeks. To build a fully online payroll service for schools called EdPay, the future of schools’ payroll in New Zealand, EPL sought assistance from Assurity in testing and shifting to Agile and DevOps methodologies. Assurity’s support helped EPL in adopting Agile and DevOps practices from the outset, ensuring that the development of EdPay was carried out in a structured and efficient manner. As a result, EPL was able to create a robust and reliable online payroll service for schools that can provide accurate and timely payments.

Solution

Assurity provided EPL with a suite of tailored services to support their agile transformation and the development of EdPay. This included Agile coaching and Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) training to meet EPL’s specific organisational requirements.

Additionally, Assurity provided testing and DevOps services in a managed services model, as well as quality assurance services. Assurity also developed customised, reusable test frameworks to meet the unique requirements of EPL’s payroll platform. These frameworks have enabled EPL to streamline its testing processes and reduce its testing cycles, ultimately delivering EdPay to market faster and with greater confidence in its quality. Overall, Assurity’s services have helped EPL to adopt agile practices, manage its testing processes, and ultimately build a more reliable payroll platform for New Zealand schools.

“Because with the relentless fortnightly pay cycle, time is of the essence and there is never enough of it. The tools and expertise we’ve built with Assurity has given us the confidence to, for example, upload collective agreement changes within six weeks, rather than the 12 it previously took. It’s a miracle we can do that – it’s phenomenal and that’s thanks to the testing we are able to do so.”

Results

EPL’s work processes were modernised to support its digital transformation journey, moving from a paper-based to a 90% digital payroll process. The introduction of Agile and DevOps practices resulted in a greater focus on efficient testing. As a result, the time required to upload and put collective agreement changes into effect in the EdPay system was reduced by 50%, from 12 weeks to six weeks.
